As featured in GQ.

Meet the MATELOT Breton sweater, the quintessential piece that has defined Saint James for generations. Handcrafted in our ateliers in Normandy, this authentic fisherman sweater embodies tradition. Originally designed for mariners facing the harsh seas of Newfoundland, it features a very close-fitting design that hugs the body, creating an authentic sailor’s silhouette.

For a more relaxed fit, choose the BINIC sweater.

This sweater showcases Saint James' secret knit - a tightly woven knit that is nearly water-resistant - alongside a left shoulder button closure for easy dressing and a snug fit to keep you warm. With extra length to protect your back and constructed from 100% untreated virgin wool, the MATELOT is built for both durability and comfort.

Whether you’re seeking a coastal look or an urban edge, the MATELOT sweater offers timeless style. Its very slim cut and absence of a ribbed hem provide a unique fit, perfect for purists who appreciate a traditional, no-compromise design.

This piece is for those who value history, craftsmanship, and a fit that’s as authentic as it gets.

How to care for wool garments?

We recommend hand washing your garment. Rinse it first with lukewarm water, then a second time with cold water.

If the care label of the piece mentions the possibility of machine washing, set it to a dedicated wool setting, at “Cold” temperature. If your machine does not have a dedicated wool setting, then set the temperature to 90°F and the spin to 400 or 500 RPM maximum.

Use a special wool detergent.

Your garment should not be soaked, as it may warp. Wash it inside out. When the laundry cycle is finished, lay it out to dry flat.

If you have to wash your woolen garment by hand, be careful not to exceed a temperature of 90°F, and do not rub. Let it soak for less than 5 minutes, then squeeze it gently. Rinse it first with lukewarm water, then a second time with cold water.

You can iron your woolen garment using only steam or by setting your iron to a minimum and placing a damp cloth between the iron and the wool to prevent burning the fibers.

Be careful not to over-pack your woolen clothes in your closet. If they are wrinkled, you can hang them up in your bathroom for a while. Thanks to the steam, they will smooth out without needing to be ironed.

Finally, it is not necessary to wash your garment after each use. Unlike synthetic fibers, wool prevents dust from sticking in depth. You can brush your woolen garment with a soft brush to remove surface dust.
