Scarves

Saint James scarves and hats not only provide a cozy layer of comfort, but they compliment our nautical outfits like no other accessory. Find the perfect neck scarf to go with your Breton clothing or choose something warmer like our classic navy and white striped wool scarf.

How to choose and wear a scarf

The choice of material for a scarf is crucial and depends mainly on the season.

There is nothing like a wool scarf to protect yourself from the winter cold. The styles in pure new wool are to be preferred: just like the fisherman sweaters, their tight knitting offers insulating properties perfectly adapted to the lowest temperatures.

The mixed material scarves, made of 50% wool and 50% acrylic, are also very warm, and have the advantage of being a little easier to care for than the 100% wool models.

In spring or autumn, cotton scarves, such as the Adam and Eve models in double-layer jerseys, are warm enough while being more breathable and lighter than wool scarves. The jersey used for the Adam and Eve scarves is the same as the one used to make the Saint James Breton striped shirts.

Whatever the season, the scarf is a part of your outfit in its own right. As it is very close to the face, it is recommended to choose it in a color that harmonizes with skin tone, eye, and hair color.

Its color must also be able to match that of the clothes worn, without overdoing it. Indeed, it is fashionable to play on shades or use the scarf as a reminder of the outfit's color. In that case, it is not recommended to match all its accessories, such as the scarf, the bag, or the shoes.

There are different ways to wear a scarf. From a single accessory, it is possible to create several different styles.

For a man, it can be crossed under a suit jacket to maintain the elegance of the outfit without getting cold. Classic and understated, the Parisian knot consists of folding the scarf in half, putting it around the neck, and passing the two sides through the loop thus formed.

The scarf can be rolled upon itself and the sides hidden inwards for a slightly more bohemian chic style. A variation of the Parisian knot, which gives a slightly more sophisticated and original knot, consists of folding the scarf in half and placing it around the neck, then sliding a single section through the loop. This must then be rotated at an angle of 180 degrees before accommodating the second pan.

While all these techniques are suitable for both men and women, some knotting methods are more feminine. This is particularly the case when the scarf partially covers the shoulders, in the case of oversized models, or the draping technique, which consists of throwing a section of the scarf behind the back.

More style and shopping considerations

Whether it is a square of silk or modal, or even a cotton scarf, this piece of clothing has a place of pride in the wardrobe, adapts to all styles, and appeals to all generations.

The silk square, like any square scarf, can be tied in several ways. For women, the silk square rolled up and leaving a small bow on the side gives an appreciable vintage touch. The central knot is more suitable with a classic outfit like a pant suit.

Worn with the tip forward, it is suitable for a more casual outfit while clearly showing its patterns. The hair bob can be tied like a tie and goes wonderfully with an elegant shirt or blouse for a dandy look that suits both men and women.

On the men's side, the silk square can be worn with a simple knot for a chic yet relaxed style or be folded and worn flush with the collar with a protruding point for more distinction.

The shawl, made in a light and simple material such as cotton veil, is more suited to a casual chic look.

Like the scarf, it can be worn with a Parisian knot, rolled upon itself, or simply passed behind the neck. In the latter case, it certainly does not protect against the cold. Still, when it is not too long, it elegantly emphasizes the silhouette of a suit jacket or the cut of a dress.
